Henri Cartier Bresson.
The photograph by Henri Cartier Bresson has been represented in an odd way. The title of the photo is ‘Man leaping over puddle’. I can see a man jumping across water with a fence in the mid-ground and many buildings in the background. Since it has buildings within the photograph it would be a landscape, this doesn’t work for all cases but in this case it is the reason for it as we can’t properly see the man only his silhouette. At first I thought it would have been taken in the 80’s as its in black and white, it’s quite run down and looks old fashioned. When doing my research I found out that Bresson took the majority of his photos in the 40’s and 50’s. My eye is automatically drawn to the reflection of the man. This is because there isn’t much around it, it also applies to the rule of thirds and so it’s interesting to the eye. To me it looks like it was set up. The texture of the image is smooth in the fore-ground but rougher in the background. The image makes me feel as if someone is being trapped as there is a metal fence which connotes imprisonment. The man is leaping which makes me think he wants freedom.
I think the theme of the image would be imprisonment because the way the industrial estate is behind the gates and fence. The form of the image is quite harsh lines with a soft silhouette of a man leaping across a puddle. The negative space around the ladder and the man makes it stand out to the audience and is very intriguing. The edge of the building creates a very distinctive framing for the sky. The whole mood of the image is dull and dark. As the image is in black and white it looks very grey and dull it gives the photograph a negative emotion about it. The content of the photograph is someone trapped behind an industrial building. The other men in the background makes us as the audience feel like they are jealous of him as he is looking out as the guy leaping. Not only that but because we cant see the man’s face it makes us wonder who he is, what he’s doing and why he is there. This then makes the whole photograph interesting and we want to know more.
Henri Cartier Bresson was born August 22nd 1908 and was thought to have passed away august 2004 however it has never been sure. He was a middle class French photographer who slowly became better at photography and became famous for his shots. Bresson put together a 400 print exhibition which toured the United States . At the beggining of his career he started as a journalist and became to believe that an image tells a story better than an article or story.
He was believed to have helped street photography that is still used in todays society.
Henri Cartier Bresson had many famous quotes including …
"For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to “give a meaning” to the world, one has to feel involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression."
Seen as Bresson had famous quotes it shows us how much people appreciated his work and aspired to be just like him. Many of his photos followed the same theme, black and white outlines of people in weird and wonderful ways. Some of them did show faces and emotions of people but every image had to tell a story. He liked to capture a moment of his life he went all around the world photographing Mexico, Canada, USA, Europe, India, Burma, Pakistan, Indonesia, Africa, Burma, China, Japan, Cuba, and the USSR, among other places. He got so good at what he was doing famous painters including Matisse, Picasso, Coco Chanel, Truman Capote, and Gandhi wanted his input and help with their work.
He was one of the first people to ever use a 35mm camera which are still used now as a standard Single Lense Reflex (SLR) camera. Henri Cartier Bresson is a very inspirational photographer so I hope to carry on looking into his work in the future.
Aaron Hobson.
Aaron Hobson Is a famous photographer who is famous for not only his photographs but the inspiration of how he becomes about these images. The certain photographs of his that I was looking through were from Google maps. He used google maps as an inspiration to his images, searching all over the world for weird and wonderful shots. Of course his final images were certainly photo edited but the results are almost astonishing. To demonstrate just how weird and wonderful Hobson’s work is I’ve put together a small collection of all his work to help express how he works and why he does what he does. When researching Hobson I couldn’t find out much about him, this may say a lot about his personality as he leaves himself as a mystery. I personally would like to find out more about him but this is what makes him and his work so intriguing. This is a few of his pieces of work.
This images are from all over the world, France, Spain, South Africa and many other countries. The reason i chose to do a small piece on him was because i find his work interesting and intriguing. I hope to further develop my knowledge in him later on throughout my photography course.
PEROU
Perou is a famous English photographer. He has worked all around the world. The reason I have chose to interpret him in my work is because I find his work so interesting and different. His work is mainly portraits with famous and non famous people. He claims that none of his work is edited but it is very well staged.
I first came across his work when I saw an advert for his TV show called Dirty Sexy Things. I found the advert inspired me to watch it. The whole series of shows were about the journey of 8 models being taken to various parts of the world to do amazingly weird photo shoots. I found this show very entertaining to watch and I enjoyed watching how the staged the photographs. A few of the photographs taken have been interpreted in my work to show how I became against work.
Perou’s birth name is Ralph John Perou but in modern days he is known as Perou for all his photography. He was born in East Sussex in 1970, he didn’t always believe he wanted to be a photographer instead he wanted to be a long distance lorry driver until he saw the light in photography. After doing his Degree in Photography Perou went on to do photo shoots at Click studios in London . He started out photographing for small magazine companies. Following that he started to do work with his friends who were in a band called ‘Elcka’. He was commonly known as a ‘fetish photographer’ as he became known for his weird and wonderful portraits and fashion shots. He was then featured in a book called Fetish: Masters of Erotic Fantasy Photography. In 2000 He opened his own studios in hackney called ‘Perou factory’. Since that day Perou has slowly been inproving his shots and working with a wide range of people.
When looking at his work I liked it straight away. This may have been because he uses celebrities that I like or because his work is a little different to what I’ve seen before. On Perou’s website he includes subheadings so that you can easily find your way around his website. He has titles these New, Portraits, Music, Projects, Homeless art, Commissions, Fashion, Video and Personal. I believe this helps show how broad his range of work is. All these images have been taken off of Perou’s website by Print screening. This is because they are otherwise difficult to find high quality versions of the photograph.
